Austin Implements Living Streets Program

The City of Austin Living Streets Program officially launched! The program introduces three pathways to build community, increase safety, and improve quality of life across our city.

“There are three, resident-led street activations available through this program:

  • Neighborhood Block Parties are a fun, easy way to build community and get to know your neighbors. Block Parties are one-time closures of a single block to allow residents to hold small, locally-focused events.

  • Healthy Streets provide ongoing space for people to walk, bike, roll, exercise and build community within the public right-of-way by discouraging motor vehicle traffic along several local streets.

  • Play Streets provide recurring space for children and adults alike to gather and play in a local street by allowing residents to partially close a single block to motor vehicle traffic for a few hours per day several days per week.

Austin Living Streets Program

“To get a Living Street in your neighborhood, you will need to apply and gather as much support from your neighbors as possible. For Healthy Streets and Play Streets activations, which are brand new programs, the application process may be competitive. Final application submissions for the first round of Healthy and Play Streets are due January 5, and there is an intermediate 10-day staff-review step, so we encourage anyone interested to submit an Expression of Interest as soon as possible.

“If your application is not selected for the early 2024 implementation round, it will remain eligible and will be considered in subsequent rounds for up to one year. Visit the Living Streets website to learn more about eligibility and begin the application process. You can also send questions or feedback to livingstreets@austintexas.gov. “
